  • The Proposal

    ring_proposal B&W2

A young couple approached us while Steve and I were taking pictures of the two of us on the shores of West Traverse Bay. The young man asked if we would take their picture. I said, sure, but my husband was the photographer and I, the writer. As Steve positioned them by a large rock near Grand Traverse Lighthouse, I made small talk.

“Hi, we’re Steve and Teresa. Where are you two from?” I asked.

“We’re from Bay City–I’m Abbey, and he’s David. We’re celebrating our 5th anniversary,” said Abbey.

    “Congratulations—so, you’ve been married 5 years.”

“Well, we’ve been together for 5 years,” Abbey said.

“Oh, we’ve been married for 34 years, and still taking photos of each other!”

As they pose for another picture, I commented, “You must be a very patient gal.”

At that moment, David looked at me, and then asked Steve if he’d take another picture. The thought went through my mind that maybe I should have kept the comment about being patient to myself. Just then, David knelt down in front of Abbey as he reached into his pocket. Out came a beautiful flashy diamond ring while at the same time, he said,

    “Abbey, will you marry me?”

Steve and I stood there, mouths open, Abbey teared up, and I said, “Oh, my goodness!”

Together we said, CONGRATULATIONS, YOU TWO! How very exciting! We left them alone to kiss and hug. Later, they tracked us down and David mentioned my “being patient” comment. He confessed they’d been waiting until after he graduated. She was due to graduate in May.

How cool to be in on the ground level of this young couple’s proposal and new life together as husband and wife. David and Abbey: We wish you many joyful years ahead.

Orange, yellow, and reds abound as we toured Leelanau Peninsula in northern Michigan. The weather cooperated part time showering us with intermittent rain and sun. Traverse City is about 130 miles from our Grand Rapids home port, but somehow it took us over 200 miles to arrive in TC. No matter, we were celebrating my birthday “month,” since my birthday actually (how about that Liberty? Nana says that word a lot too!) Occurred October 8.

At one point, we climbed lots of steps to view Lake Michigan between Arcadia and Frankfort nestled in beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes. The climb and scenic view proved worth the huffing and puffing. Some trees still held fast their green leaves and others had blown away from early snow and fierce winds. In fact, a park ranger noted it had snowed the day we traveled.

Pumpkins popped up their orange and green colors in fields, farm driveways, and roadside vendors (yes, there are green pumpkins).  I believe I found a very sincere pumpkin patch. Apples of every color, make and genre abound. Can’t you just smell the poignant armor of fresh baked apple pie with caramel topping?

We combed the beach at “Christmas Cove” near Leland for a Petoskey stone – and yes, I did find one!!  Can’t wait to see Leland’s new municipal building once it is completed –their docks have been expanded to allow for more boats. The car thermometer registered an icy 32 degrees. At that point, we were glad we didn’t ride the motorcycle like we did last year at this time. Last year, the weather was much more comfortable for bike riding.

Steve, my hubby, wanted desperately to get to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park – and we did, prior to their closing. We ended a perfect day as we watched the final ray’s descent over Lake Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes. Only a few brave remaining tourists remained to experience tranquility and serenity at its finest. Gentle breezes ruffled the remaining leaves—it would be a cold, clear night as a single bright star appeared and we bid the dunes goodnight.

Wait? What about “The Proposal?” more to follow in the next post. For now, I can tell you it occurred near the base of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse.

  • Parkinson Disease Grant awarded to Grand Rapids

I was so excited to learn Grand Rapids has been awarded part of a 6.2 million dollar grant for research on Parkinson Disease.  I just had to call my very first (and favoritest–is that a word?) boss, J. Brock Albert…a.k.a. Jim Albert.

I spoke with him and his dear writer-wife, Linda in Longboat Key, Florida. I didn’t realize Linda is a writer too of essays, poetry, literary journals, etc..,  So, I’ve found another kindred spirit.

Both the Alberts were thrilled to hear that GR will be conducting research on Parkinson’s especially because Jim is living with Parkinsons. A couple of years ago, they moved from their long time residence in East Grand Rapids, and now reside in Florida all year.  They invited Steve and I to come down and visit them, so who knows, maybe we will!

  • Are you troubled?

     tears

Don’t be sorry about your tears. A devotional by Anne Cetas in Our Daily Bread reminds us that our emotions are God-given. Emotions are a “characteristic of our having been made in God’s image (Gen. 1:27). We shouldn’t be ashamed or apologize for crying. God grieves. Look with me in:

    • Gen. 6:6-7       God was sorrowful and angry about His people’s sin and the separation it caused between Him and His people.
    • John 11:28-44 finds Jesus (God in the flesh) joining his Mary and Martha in grief in the loss of their brother, Lazarus
    • John 11:35 – “Jesus wept.”

So, it’s okay to weep. It’s okay to lean on others to shoulder our burden. We are only human. In weeping, we show others we are human, and that we trust God to do what is right.

If there was any doubt in my mind I didn’t want to celebrate my birthday, doubt disappeared when I received a call from my dear three-year old granddaughter, Liberty.

“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you,” as she sang the words out loud and clear. I switched over to speakerphone on my cell phone inside the mobile phone store where my husband and I were talking with a salesman. The whole showroom heard her sweet voice. I beamed—others around me smiled—our salesman gave me a 20% discount on our purchases. Life is good!

When I hung up, I stated that the voice on the other end of the phone was my granddaughter calling me from Minnesota just to wish Nana a Happy Birthday!

Was it my imagination or did the atmosphere go from stuffy to friendly—all because of one phone call from a young child? The gentleman next to me at the counter started a conversation with me—“How old is your granddaughter? Mine is six years old.”

Lighter, lifted spirits seemed to permeate the store showroom. All because of a few choice words spoken in love.

  • Do you possess ‘intellectual property?’

DSD_7932Last evening I attended our 1st Tuesday of the month WMFCW (West Michigan Fellowship of Christian Writers) group. We gather at Panera Bread in Grandville where I met a couple of new faces. It didn’t take long to learn about our common denominators.

When asked, “Why do you write?” –I found it interesting that most of us can’t help but write. Our heads are filled with ideas bombarding our minds regardless of the time of day or night. We write because of a burning passion deep within our souls. There’s that drive to get the words down on paper and share with fellow travelers to encourage, point in the right direction, or maybe even teach others a lesson learned along our own personal journey. God gave each of us a gift/talent, and we dare not waste the skills he freely gave to us as writers.

While attending the Maranatha Writers Conference in Muskegon last month, Anne Fenske (Grace Acres Press) answered the question: “What do publishers do?” Our group offered some possible answers:

    • Read a LOT of manuscripts
    • Made decisions: reject or accept
    • Edit
    • Encourage
    • Re-focus

I found Anne’s answer to be very interesting: “Publishers are venture capitalists for people who have intellectual property.” The intellectual property could be music, art, words, articles, books, etc.

Therefore, I must make every effort possible to bring something very valuable to the table. Each work must be as perfect as humanly possible regarding spelling and grammar, crafted in a clear, focused, uniquely positioned way. My work must stand out in excellence above and beyond others as I incorporate my own voice which is uniquely different than anyone else on planet earth. This takes hard work, discipline, and an extremely tough outer shell. Am I fit for the task? Yes, I am! With God, nothing is impossible!

  • Be of good courage!

This will be a busy and emotional week. To begin the week, my friend and I plan to attend a visitation and funeral for a dear friend’s 95-year old grandfather.  He was near and special to her and to the rest of the family. Saying good-bye to loved ones, attending visitations and funerals are not top of the list of “want to dos.”  They top the list for: “have-to-dos.”

My own dear mom died of cancer at the early age of 58. It’s been 19 years since she was promoted to glory; yet I still cry for her. I will shed tears today–I can’t help it. Her death didn’t seem fair or necessary. For this reason, funerals are particularly rough for me. And so, as I prepare myself for this funeral and try to be an encouragement to this family, a verse is Psalms comes to mind:

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you that hope in the Lord.” (Psalms 31:24)

  • Be a Barnabas today…

    Be a Barnabas today…

The name Barnabas means ‘Son of Encouragement.’ Just wondering…is there someone in my life who needs a bit of encouragement today? With today’s economy and stress, I’m sure there are MANY who could use a thumbs up, or shoulder to cry upon. Show me Lord who that person might be.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)

  • Frost on the pumpkin…and everything else!

    NEW MONTH ~ NEW SEASONDSCF5816 DSCF5814

We have frost on the pumpkin this morning (just so you know how we Mid-westerners live). Actually, we would have frost on the pumpkin if I’d purchased a pumpkin! That comes later in the month.

The weatherman predicted the frost. Frost was bound to happen eventually. But why so early? I balk at change. I tend to get comfortable with status quo. Summer shorts and tee-shirts have to now give way to long pants, long sleeve shirts, and shoes with closed toes. Yuck!

I’m not ready for winter! I’m not sure I’d ever admit to being ready for the drastic temperature changes. (see photo of thermometer registering 34 degrees this morning!) Whether I’m ready mentally or physically, life goes on. I can choose to be prepared and go with the flow, or I can moan and groan, kicking and screaming (sometimes, I’d rather kick and scream) Regardless, after summer comes fall, then winter and snow.

Seasons change, and so must I. If I place that quote in the spiritual realm, I must ask myself: have I changed? Is my relationship with God any different or better than a month ago, six months, or last year? Last year at this time, I knew of my brain tumor. I didn’t know the outcome of brain surgery, but I knew God—the Great Physician—was in control of the outcome.

This year, I can honestly say my relationship with God is stronger, closer. Through this past year’s pain, change, and learning to trust God and lean on others, I have grown in my faith. Growing pains that wouldn’t have come about in smooth sailing days.

We saw miracles from His hand and blessings galore. I chose not to become bitter, but better. I give God the glory and honor He richly deserves as He remained with me all the way. Family and friends demonstrated their love to me in ways I hadn’t seen before.

So, yes, I am strong, alive and well AND prepared for this next season of my life knowing God has my best interests in mind and He will never leave me nor forsake me.

    Go with God,
