  • Countdown: 2 more days!

Just two more days to pack and be completely ready for our 2011 motorcycle summer out west tour. I’ve laid out piles of clothes I think I’ll need for the journey: blue jeans, shorts, long sleeves and sleeveless tops. As usual, the depth of the piles exceed the depth of my suitcase.  Inside the trailer, we’ll pack our regular black leathers (jacket, chaps) and wear our red mesh jackets during warm weather. This way we’re prepared for all kinds of weather. Snow’s still in parts of the mountains and high altitude.

Steve and I will travel on our candy-apple red Gold Wing motorcycle with trailer in tow. Thank heaven for a trailer in tow. Before we purchased the trailer from a co-worker, all of our belongings needed to be strategically placed in one of the three compartments or attached backpack. Guess I’d better get back to work attempting to pack it all in; after all, I only have two more days to fit in my entire to-do list.

Planning to blog and post a picture as often as possible (every other day?) depending on Internet coverage. Come along with us on our first trip out west!

  • He never sleeps

“On my bed, I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 63:6–8).

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? I often do. For some reason, my brain rehearses what took place during the day. And if that’s not enough, I continue to think about what needs to be done tomorrow. I ponder about the words I should have said; some I should not have said. Even if my body lies in a horizontal position, my mind doesn’t always assume an “at rest” mode.

Some may count sheep. I try to concentrate on counting my blessings and name them one by one. Remembering God, his influence and help throughout the day, helps me fall into pleasant slumber.

Blessings may be minor like finding an empty parking space at the doctor’s office. Protection may come in major ways such as saving a life after a motorcycle crash or during a storm on the lake.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for keeping me in the shadow of your wings. I clearly have reason to rejoice and sing your praises day and night!

Ask:  Can you think of a recent experience where you were saved from harm or humiliation? Are you willing to acknowledge the Source of this protection?

  • It could have been worse

It could have been worse. The injury was serious, but it could have been worse. When my daughter tumbled off her dirt bike and broke her collarbone, she could have landed on a hard surface. She could have tangled with a large vehicle going at greater speed.

We are thankful she lives another day to enjoy a new sunrise and sunset. Another day to:

    • Realize family members do care and love her for who she is
    • Reflect on life, faith, and relationships
    • Capture the moments using her photography talents

Thank you, God, for allowing more time with our precious daughter, Amanda.

  • Eat to live, or live to eat?

Do you eat to live, or live to eat? That is the question. Some Facebook friends say they eat to live; others say they eat to live, and at other times, they live to eat. Several live to eat chocolate (I vote for that!). A fellow Goldwing rider declares he eats so he can ride his motorcycle. We occasionally ride with a few local Goldwing chapters and use riding our bikes as an excuse to ride and visit. Meeting at a central location, we then ride to a dinner location, and after dinner, sometimes ride again to an ice cream hot spot.

Eating is so much a part of our social experience. How often do you hear, “Let’s do lunch, or dinner, or breakfast.” Breakfast, if you’re an early morning riser. It’s hard not to imagine a meeting (business/church/social) without coffee and doughnuts, cake, or appetizers. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy food—sometimes too much.

You might recall this past summer I battled with severe intestinal issues which turned out to be an inflamed intestine, colitis. I experienced dehydration, hospitalization, an ambulance ride to the hospital emergency room, then ICU confinement. Not fun! Gatorade® with electrolytes proved my best friend. Eventually, I graduated to eating rice, bananas, Jell-O®, and popsicles. Very soon, I became weary of that boring diet and craved anything except those prescribed items. Once my stomach could digest bland items (and keep them down), I was re-introduced to real food. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

Eating is good. Eating is necessary for sustaining life. In Julia Child’s book My Life in France, Julia enrolls in a 12-month cooking school at the famous Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She learns to selectively purchase the correct ingredients and cooking utensils to prepare mouth-watering dishes. Julia shares these creations with her supportive husband, family members and friends.

Bottom line: all I do should be done in moderation. Balance is the key in eating, drinking, exercise, education, career, and so forth. Too much of any one thing (even if it’s a good thing) can tip the scales and throw mind, body, and soul off balance.

So, do you think just one piece of chocolate (dark, of course) per day is acceptable?

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17-NIV).

  • Sunset Over Muskegon Lake

What a wonderful way to end a beautiful day overlooking Muskegon Lake.  First, a motorcycle ride to dine at Harbor View Grill in White Hall.  Then, relax in an easy chair to watch the closing of another day.

  • Day in ER

Yesterday I found out again just how complex and wonderful our human bodies were created. The ER waiting room filled and emptied many times while my friend and I waited “my turn.” Of course, ambulatory people took precedence over walk-ins. Some experienced heart attacks while others had been involved in serious automobile accidents. Many were in worse shape than me—yet it always came back to “what about me, and when is it going to be my turn?”

Physicians, RNs, and varied medical staff examined this piece of me and that. They poked and pricked me for hours in our local hospital ER—only to arrive at the conclusion that no one really knows the reason for my chronic diarrhea for the past three weeks. They were able to determine what I did not have (for which I was thankful.)  My jovial nurse, Carol, hooked me up with potassium with electrolyte IVs to replenish lost hydration. Among my discharge information included an advisory to make an appointment with a GI to “dig deeper” to determine the source of my problem.

Our bodies are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made. And when you think about it—man had absolutely nothing to do with the creation process. So any revelation regarding my human flesh inner workings is indeed a miracle and a gift from God!

I’m bummed about missing the Cedar Falls Writers Conference in Iowa, and having to postpone our motorcycle trip out west, but all happened for a reason. In the meantime, I am now hydrated and on the pursuit for the cause of my diarrhea because no one is sure at this point. This quest is my prime directive at this point in my life.

  • Baldwin Blessing of the Bikes

It was the Blessing of the Bikes – this being the 38th annual event bringing in revenue for Baldwin, Newayo, etc…, all the proceeds go to Meals on Wheels.

Steve and I with friends have done it for several years now. Last year and this year, Amanda and Austin joined us,  plus this year 10 others biker friends. Very respectable and courteous crowd for over 15,000 bikers who joined in forming a record crowd this year! Our bikes were blessed by Father John for safety in travel for the entire year!
