  • How do I love thee?

Let me count the ways …

Toy trains hidden beneath the chair
    Smudges on the glass
    Whispers in my ear,
    “Nana, time to get up!”

    Boat rides
    Wagon rides and playground dates
    Bibs, blocks & bubbles
    Picture books and color crayons
Soft blankets, stuffed animals & dolls

    Absent … for a time
Someone to water flowers & herbs
    Table setter, dishwasher
    Pancake batter stirrer
Filler of animal bowls to the brim & beyond

    Counting the days
    ’til we meet again
    To fill that grandchild-spot
    deep within my heart

    Love you, Nana

  • Merry Hearts

Silly smiles and goofy grins…modeling Grandpa’s hat…throwing snowballs and building snow forts—that’s what children do. They just want to have fun, enjoy life, and be loved.

Playing with building blocks, creating, dreaming. This is the stuff that creates a happy, merry heart within Nana and Grandpa.

“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit…the cheerful heart has a continual feast” (Proverbs 15:13, 15).

“A merry heart doeth good like medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).

  • Little people greeting

My morning turned golden at the first sight of the little people in my life and the sound of my name. My day was complete.

First thing each morning, I’d be greeted by a little person running full tilt toward me exclaiming, “Nana-Nana!” We’d hug and cuddle, sit awhile, maybe stroke the kitties. I’d ask if they had slept well. They’d ask about some activity planned for the day or we’d talk about a memory from yesterday. They behaved as if we had all the time in the world. No hurry—no worry.

Today, I hear no call of my name, Nana, reserved solely for my two precious grandchildren. My son and wife returned back to their home in Minnesota after celebrating the holidays with us in Michigan.  I’m truly thankful for their visit, but I already miss the pitter-patter of little people’s feet along with their every-ready help and unconditional love.
