Water Therapy

Atlantic Ocean – Wrightsville Beach

Ocean waves thunder & roll
Crashing unrepentant against the shore
Greenish-blue water with froth on top
Wind blasts sand on my skin
Children chase seagulls
Birds hover overhead
Carried along with the breeze
People play … enjoying life
Others rest after a hectic week
Some immersed in their favorite read
Carefree feeling
Place to unwind
Absorb sun’s rays
To just be!

I stoop low
Spying a smooth peculiar shell
Purple hued edges
Catch my eye
I gather grains of polished sand
As they trickle past my fingertips

Praying
May the wind smooth and polish
My rough and jagged edges
May I be beautiful and useful
In Your sight
For Your glory!

Book lover corner

“It is a great thing to start life with a small number of really good books which are your very own,”—Arthur Conan Doyle.

Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely LOVE books. Fiction, non-fiction, memoir, mystery, funny & serious books. I give them away and let people borrow from my extensive, unorganized library. You might hear me say,

“Take care of this one. Treat it gently; like family.”

As an early married gal, I read all I could about engagements and then married life. Love languages of men and women. During my child rearing years, I tended toward non-fiction, self help type of books. How to potty train in one week. Then, we moved to the turbulent teen years. What to do when you teen doesn’t like you any more (not even a little bit)? Later, as our children grew and moved out, I stared at the empty nest years. How to keep our marriage flame burning brightly. Happy days came when our first born son and his wife were blessed with our first grandchild, Liberty Hope. How do I creatively grandparent from far away?

Seasons come and go in your life and in mine. One of the keys I’ve found is to be flexible. Having a positive attitude and eagerness to embrace a new chapter in life also is helpful.    image001 (Copy)

Over the last several years, I’ve been investigating various genres of books. After attending various writer conferences, I’ve learned some benefits of exposing myself to all sorts of writing.

But the most widely used and appreciated book throughout my entire life would have to be the Bible. The Word of God. Scripture. There are many different titles/references to this Holy Book. Whatever you choose to call this inspired and God-breathed book, I’ve found it to be the answer to any question that might surface during a lifetime. Whether you’re angry, sad, doubtful, happy, searching, or confused, ask God to lead you to the passage that will speak to your specific heart need.

• What is the burning question(s) in your mind right now?

The Transformation Project

This year, our local Word Weavers writers group embarked upon a mission of compiling an anthology book. The theme would be “Transformation.” For some odd reason, the idea didn’t excite me—at least not at first.    image001 (Copy) (2)

Most of the submissions were already turned in, critiqued, and accepted before I decided it would be a good idea to get with the program and come up with something for the book. I searched my archives and found the perfect journal article. My son.

My son was transformed later in his teens—(you’ll just have to read my story to find out about the before and after details). Little did I know that during that whole upsetting ordeal that God was transforming my heart. Transforming it from independence on self and dependence on the only wise God. I didn’t even realize this story had evolved into a double transformation. One in my dear son’s heart and one close to home: me.

Maybe you’ve experienced deep grief in your soul in the past. Or, maybe you’re experiencing it right now. I invite you to take a look at the stories enclosed within the covers of our new release, The Transformation Project. The book is available in both paperback and Kindle format.

P.S. the title of my story is: I Hope He’ll Come Home.

Dare to tell about a time of #transformation in your life. #WordWeavers W MI authors did. http://amzn.to/1d195NW

Keep your eyes on the goal

Johann Sebastian Bach “played because God gave him that beauty & it wasn’t about him, it was about what God gave him to create … He played it because it had to be played whether anyone heard it or not.”

Do you ever feel like no one is listening or reading your words? Do you sometimes feel like you are talking to a blank wall? I do — sometimes.

But then I receive a letter from a reader who took the time to write a handwritten note. The letter spoke volumes to me. He writes, “Thank you for your transparency and ability to help others that have lost loved ones … keep the faith and keep loving Christ Jesus … keep spreading the healing balm of the Lord.”

Those words encouraged me to keep on writing, learning, and practicing the craft. Even though he didn’t say it specifically, I heard the words, “Don’t give up!” We need people who spread positive thoughts, morality, and hope. Unfortunately, we encounter negativity, immorality and fear in the real world.

So, I will focus on the goal and persevere to pen God-honoring words.

Do keep those cards & letters (and comments) coming. Thank you— I appreciate you!

How do I love thee?

Let me count the ways …

Toy trains hidden beneath the chair
Smudges on the glass
Whispers in my ear,
“Nana, time to get up!”

Boat rides
Wagon rides and playground dates
Bibs, blocks & bubbles
Picture books and color crayons
Soft blankets, stuffed animals & dolls

Absent … for a time
Someone to water flowers & herbs
Table setter, dishwasher
Pancake batter stirrer
Filler of animal bowls to the brim & beyond

Counting the days
’til we meet again
To fill that grandchild-spot
deep within my heart

Love you, Nana

Quest for Truth & Justice

Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, “The Bungalow Mystery,” by Carolyn Keene

I just had to check out this book at the library. My Mom had the whole Nancy Drew book series and I’ve read them all more than once. But that was many moons ago and I felt a nostalgic urge to open up a Nancy Drew book on vacation.

In The Bungalow Mystery, Nancy Drew is on a mission to help a new friend whose guardian may be suspect to stealing her inheritance. Of course, Nancy encounters a crook and uses her expertise to solve the mystery crime. Predictable? Yes, but still allowed me a trip down memory lane. Originally written in 1930 and reprinted numerous times, Nancy Drew mysteries were centered on an old-fashioned quest for truth and justice.

*  Simpler times
*  Less hurry, less worry
*  Less modern technology, more relationship building
*  Exercise consisted of farms & outdoor gardening
*  Less crime & violence
*  Neighbor watched out for your child & you watched out for theirs
*  Moms, Dads, and families raised children

Those were the days … anyone remember the Nancy Drew mystery books?
